Various industrial and non-industrial operations and activities can impact wildlife and important habitat, and it takes extra steps to protect and preserve these special resources. Gail Barnes of the South Plains Wildlife Rehabilitation Center will talk about the SPWRC. SPWRC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of native species on the South Plains of Texas. Wildlife is accepted at the facility without regard to species, size, or popularity with the human race. The meeting will be a fantastic way to learn more about the Rehabilitation Center and to actually see some of the birds the Center has rehabilitated. SPWRC is always in need of certain items. Please feel free to bring one or two listed items to the meeting. Gail has been a volunteer for the South Plains Wildlife Rehab Center for over 10 years and is currently the education coordinator for SPWRC. Wildlife education keeps Gail very busy. Last year she presented 109 environmental educational programs and for the past 5 years has done a weekly TV program on Lubbock Channel 13 called Wildlife Friday. Every week a different native wildlife species is profiled. Gail maintains both state and federal rehabilitation and possession permits for native wildlife. Gail also has her own non-profit facility called NightWings which specializes in bats and owls. Rehabilitation is a passion for Gail as evidenced when she quit a state job as a rehabilitator counselor for neuromuscular disorders after 17 years of service. In September 2007, Gail was on the cover of the Texas Techsan (TTU alumni magazine) and the feature story called Winging It. Gail is a graduate of Texas Tech University and North Texas State University.. Visitors are welcome. No RSVP is required. We will order from the menu and pay individually. It is not necessary to purchase a meal to attend the meeting. Further schedules have not yet been determined. |
